How to Die in Oregon - 1217 Words
How to Die in Oregon Portland, USA, 107 Min., 3/13/12 9PM (Watched online) How to Die in Oregon is an emotionally charged, and intimate exploration of the controversial ââ¬Å"Death with Dignityâ⬠Law passed in the state of Oregon in 1994. How to Die in Oregon received the Grand Jury Prize in the U. S. Documentary Competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, along with other countless accolades, and is currently available as an HBO Original Film. In his film, filmmaker Peter Richardson, employs the observational mode of documentary to witness how patients families and friends grapple with the legal option of physician assisted suicide. The end result is a multitude of powerful one-on-one interviews, archival footage of patients, and candid long takes. Richardson cuts himself out of the interviews , and edits together strikingly frank sound bytes to showcase his subjects talking about death and the affect of the law. His use of archival footage primarily captures his patients when they were healthy, and provides a striking contrast as they seriously discuss death towards the end of their lives. His use of candid long takes captures some of the most poignant moments of the film, including the final minutes of one manââ¬â¢s life after taking the lethal drugs. The camera is a spectator in the room, as the man accompanied by his family; all face his personal decision to die together. All of these different footage types work together to provide emotional weight to an already troubling subject. 2) Richardsonââ¬â¢s non-interventionist style is a prime example of observational documentary, and works specifically well in capturing and promulgating the subject of death. According to Nichols, observational documentaries started appearing in the 1960ââ¬â¢s as result of more mobile and smaller equipment. Furthermore, observational documentary stresses non-intervention, as filmmakers objectively observe indirect speech, candidness in the form of long takes, and create a world out of historical reality not fabricated withShow MoreRelatedThe United States Of America1536 Words à |à 7 PagesSupreme Court case Gonzales v. Visit The Saint Louis Holocaust Museum For My Independent...
I chose to visit the Saint Louis Holocaust Museum for my independent field trip on April 6, 2016 to get out of my typical comfort zone and learn about a specific group of people that endured the largest genocide in recorded history. Upon entering the building, I was shocked to see the number of uniforms and other items that were recovered from World War II. This was the first thing that really set the tone for me and put me in the right emotional state to think about the fact that these are real families and children that were murdered simply because the Naziââ¬â¢s wanted to. A few of the numbers that really shocked me include, at least six million Jewish were killed, thirteen percent of the population of Russia was wiped out, and a grand total of seventy to eighty-five million people were killed in WW2 (3-4% of the worldââ¬â¢s population). The Holocaust was initiated based on the premise that Jewish people, mentally/physically handicapped people, and a few other smaller people groups were all inferior to the Aryan race as described by Adolf Hitler. The direct effects of the Holocaust are easily identifiable, such as Jewish and military deaths, and the destruction of whole cities, but I was utterly shocked when I read about the indirect effects that this level of hate towards people had brought forth. As the Naziââ¬â¢s began to occupy countries in Europe, their allies such as Japan also made leaps and bounds to attack other countries such as the attack on Pearl Harbor in December ofShow MoreRelatedOne Significant Change That Has Occurred in the World Between 1900 and 2005. Global Warming and Climate Change - 783 Words
Global warming is a great treat for our planet and its nature. It gradually wipes out everything which exists on the earthââ¬â¢s surface. In recent years, global warming and climate change have become one of the biggest topics, which rise concerns among people. Global warming is an increase in average surface temperature of the earth. It has several negative impacts on the environment and on its inhabitants. Many factors can cause global warming, but the significant one is greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases have negative effects on climate and cause melting of polar ice caps, acid rain, and ozone layer destruction. The significant effect of global warming is emission of greenhouse gases, which has numerous negative environmental impacts.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Scientists have predicted that many islands such as, the Marshal Islands and Kiribati might lose their lands or may disappear from the earthââ¬â¢s face because of water risings. Acid rain is another damaging result of greenhouse gases. Acid rain or acid precipitation is the rain which contains high level of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The acidity rate or PH of acid rain is about 4.5 up to 5. Acid rain occurs when harmful gases in the atmosphere react with the rainwater and oxygen, which make an acidic mixture. Furthermore, sunshine increases the level of these reactions, and the result of this process is sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Acid rainââ¬â¢s drops are very damaging and harmful for our environment. Forests which are the major source of oxygen and good absorbers of carbon dioxide have been damaged by the acid rain. For instance, recent researches show that when acidic water drops hit forests, tree growth declines. In addition, when acid rain drops fall on tree leaves, they cause the leaves to lose their minerals faster; therefore, roots cannot resupply them anymore. Benefits And Treatment Of Dissociative Identity Disorder
Diazepam Paired With Psychotherapy Dissociative Identity Disorder is a disorder that is hardly talked about, however has extreme effects on patients that suffer with it. However, this topic is important because it can lead to finding treatments that may be more effective for patients with DID. Past studies have shown that the main treatment for Dissociative Identity Disorder usually involves therapy. The most popular types of therapy are psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and family therapy. Treatment for DID has a specific purpose which is to unite an individual with their personalities, and form a functional identity (Pais, 2009). Additionally, a strength of past studies is that they usually do a follow up on patients. Another strength is that the participants are usually all of different ages. One limitation is that there is never enough participants for research, another limitation is that there arenââ¬â¢t many treatment options to try on patients. Furthermore, is diazepam useful w hen paired with psychotherapy? Moreover, my study will be unique because there has only been one case that tried lorazepam, which is a similar drug to diazepam, and it proved to be successful (Mushtaq, Shoib, Arif, Shah, Mushtaq, 2014). Types of Personality Tests - 561 Words
My Personality I took two personality test and scored what I think is pretty accurate. The first test I took was created by a church but still accurate in the psychology field. By taking this test it would help you figure out if your personality is one of the four types of people. The four types are choleric, sanguine, phlegmatic or melancholy. Choleric is in short words adventurous, determined, outspoken, and strong willed. Next is Sanguine which is playful, sociable, lively, and imaginative. Phlegmatic is said to be thoughtful, adaptable, attentive, and controlled. Last is Melancholy which is detailed, orderly, persistent, and deep. On this particular test I took a series of questions and gave an answer that best fitted me. In doing so I found that I have a primary and secondary personality. And the older Estella grew, the more she was taught to despise those of the opposite gender. For example when Pip had come over to play cards with Estella, Miss Havisham whispered into Eestellas ear to break his heart. As the same message to be cruel carried on throughout her childhood, it no longer was what she needed to act as, but it was what she had become. Estellaââ¬â¢s appearances may fool people but her cruelness overpowers her beauty in many ways. Although she may not have chosen to be this way, her cold- hearted thoughts and comments still hurt the people that love her, especially Pip. Estella may be kind at times but overall she is cold-hearted and very cruel to most people, leaving her despised by most.
